If your business handles hazardous material you are required by OSHA to maintain a written policy regarding the handling, care and disposal of those materials. The transmittal of information is to be accomplished by means of comprehensive hazard communication programs which are required to include container labeling and other forms of warning, safety data sheets and employee training.
Overview: How to comply with OSHA Hazardous Materials standard
- Know the standard. 29 CFR 1910.1200
- Develop a chemical inventory list.
- Label all containers.
- Obtain MSDSs. (Material Safety Data Sheets)
- Develop a written program.
- Provide training.
Material Safety Data Sheets: OSHA requires MSDSs to be in English and, at a minimum, include the following information:
- Product Identification
- Physical and Chemical characteristics
- Physical Hazards
- Health Hazards
- Primary Routes of Entry
- OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL)
- National Toxicology Program (NTP)
- Control Measures
- Emergency and First-aid Procedures
